Plate Design

The current standard-issue Alaska plate keeps it simple: a gold background with blue text, "ALASKA" across the top, and the plate number centered below. Drivers can also choose from several general-issue alternate designs, all of which count as a valid Alaska spot:

All six are current, general-issue designs — any driver can choose one at registration, so it's common to see several different Alaska looks on the road at once.

How Rare Is It on the Road Trip Game?

Rare. Alaska isn't connected to the rest of the country by road in the way other states are, so most Alaska-registered vehicles simply never leave the state. Any Alaska plate on the mainland almost certainly means someone shipped or ferried their car south.

Spotting Tip

Ferry terminals and ports in Washington State (Bellingham, Seattle) occasionally see Alaska plates on vehicles coming off the Alaska Marine Highway System — a rare but real sighting opportunity.

Fun Fact

Alaska is so large that it could contain Texas, California, and Montana combined and still have room to spare.
