What Is This?

The Road Trip License Plate Game is a free, no-sign-up tracker for one of America's most beloved car games. As you drive, you spot license plates from as many US states as you can and tap them to check them off. Your progress saves automatically in your browser — close the tab, come back later, and everything is right where you left it.

There's nothing to install, no account to create, and nothing to pay. Just open the page, start your road trip, and start spotting.

Who Made This?

This started as a family problem. We'd been playing the license plate game on road trips for years — scribbling states on whatever scrap of paper was in the glovebox, losing track halfway through, and starting over every time. The apps we found either cost money, required an account, or came loaded with features nobody asked for.

So we built our own. No download, no sign-up, no payment — just open the page and start spotting. We also make a handful of other free road trip games, which you can find in the "Try Our Other Games" section below.

A Game Worth Preserving

The license plate game has been a road trip staple since the 1950s, when the interstate highway system made cross-country driving accessible to everyone. For generations, families kept score with tally marks on gas station receipts and the backs of paper maps. The game survived because it needs nothing — no equipment, no setup, no rules to explain. You just look out the window.

We wanted to keep it that way. This tracker loads instantly, runs without a server, and saves your progress automatically. Nothing to configure, no notifications, no account. Just the game, exactly as it's always been played.

How Your Data Is Handled

Your game progress is stored entirely in your browser's localStorage — it never leaves your device and is never sent to any server. We don't collect any personal information.
