West Virginia's current plate is bold and unmistakable. A deep navy blue header bar spans the top, with "West Virginia" set in large gold lettering — the same navy-and-gold color scheme used by West Virginia University. A thin gold stripe separates the header from the white main field, where oversized dark navy registration characters fill the plate on either side of a centered silhouette of the state's distinctive panhandle outline. The bottom strip returns to the navy-and-gold palette with alternating blue and gold horizontal stripes enclosing "Wild, Wonderful" — the state's signature tourism slogan — in bold dark navy text. The whole design is compact and purposeful, leaning hard into the state's school colors and mountain identity.

How Rare Is It on the Road Trip Game?

Uncommon. West Virginia has one of the smallest populations in the country at roughly 1.8 million residents, and its rugged Appalachian terrain keeps most traffic flowing within a fairly contained mid-Atlantic footprint. You will spot it, but you will have to look.

Spotting Tip

I-64 between Charleston and the Virginia border is your single best bet — it carries heavy commuter and leisure traffic between WV and the Hampton Roads area. I-79 north toward Pittsburgh and I-77 toward Ohio are also productive corridors. If you are traveling through the mid-Atlantic at any point, rest areas along I-81 in Virginia occasionally surface West Virginia plates from workers and families crossing the border.

Fun Fact

West Virginia is the only U.S. state created by seceding from another state. When Virginia voted to leave the Union in 1861, the western counties refused to go along, eventually forming their own state and being admitted to the Union in 1863. The "Wild, Wonderful" slogan on the plate has been the state's official tourism tagline since 1975 and was briefly replaced in the 2000s before public outcry brought it back permanently.
