Excelsior (Current Standard)

New York's current standard plate, introduced in 2010, is one of the most information-rich designs in the country while remaining clean and readable. The white background is bordered in navy blue with a thin gold accent stripe just below "NEW YORK" at the top, giving the header a layered, formal look. The registration characters are large and dark navy, split by a small silhouette of New York State used as a center divider. The real drama is at the bottom: a scenic panoramic strip features Niagara Falls in full cascade on the lower left and the Statue of Liberty set against the Manhattan skyline on the lower right — two of the state's most iconic landmarks sharing a single plate. "EXCELSIOR," the state motto meaning "Ever Upward," runs across the lower center in warm gold, tying the palette together. It is a plate that tells a geographic story at highway speed.

Empire State Gold

This bold alternative design swaps the white field of the standard plate for a vivid gold and amber background that fills the entire plate face. The navy blue rounded border gives it a framed, badge-like quality. "NEW YORK" appears in gold lettering set on a navy arched banner at the top — the contrast between the warm gold background and cool navy type is striking. The large registration characters and centered state outline maintain the same layout as the standard plate, but the monochromatic amber-on-navy palette makes this version feel more like a trophy than a standard government document. "EMPIRE STATE" in navy at the bottom reinforces the confident, declarative tone of the design.

Empire State Scenic Blue (Older Design)

This older generation plate, which preceded the current Excelsior design, uses a white background framed by a solid blue border. The standout feature is the panoramic blue header band spanning the full width of the plate: Niagara Falls tumbles down the left side and the New York City skyline — with the Empire State Building clearly recognizable — rises on the right, all rendered in a lighter illustrative blue against the darker header. "NEW YORK" in white lettering sits centered in that band. The main registration area is clean white with the familiar dark navy characters and state outline. A matching blue footer banner carries "THE EMPIRE STATE" in white. This plate was widely issued through the 2000s and is still found on older registered vehicles, so you will occasionally encounter it alongside the current Excelsior version.

Common. New York is the fourth most populous state with nearly 20 million residents, and it sits at the heart of the busiest highway network in North America. NY plates circulate across the entire Eastern Seaboard and appear in every major metro area in the country, not just the Northeast.

Anywhere along I-95 from Maine to Florida, NY plates are ubiquitous — New Yorkers are heavy road travelers and the state feeds traffic onto every major corridor. The I-87 (New York State Thruway) and I-90 are the main arteries heading north toward Canada and west toward Ohio, so rest stops on those routes are reliable hunting grounds. Outside the Northeast, look at Florida beaches and interstate parking lots in the winter months, when New Yorkers migrate south in large numbers. The Excelsior plate's white-with-gold design is easy to distinguish at a distance, while the older blue scenic plate's full-width panoramic header gives it away even faster.

New York State has one of the longest continuous license plate numbering histories in the country and was among the first states to require plates on both the front and rear of vehicles. The state motto "Excelsior" — used on the current plate — dates to 1778, making it one of the oldest state mottos still in active use. The word was also immortalized by poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in his 1841 poem of the same name, which tells the story of a relentless young climber pressing ever upward through the Alps — an image that fits both the plate's mountain and skyline imagery and New York's perpetual forward momentum.
