Missouri's current plate is a straightforward patriotic design built around red, white, and blue. The background is white, framed by a bold dark blue border, and the most immediately striking feature is the pair of wavy red-and-blue horizontal lines that sweep across both the top and bottom of the plate — a stylized reference to the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, the two great waterways that define the state's borders. "MISSOURI" runs across the upper center in large, bold dark blue letters, with "SHOW-ME STATE" — the state's famous nickname — printed in smaller dark blue text just below it. The registration characters are rendered in a heavy, condensed dark blue font that fills the plate from edge to edge, and directly behind them sits a ghosted watermark of the Missouri state seal: two grizzly bears flanking a quartered shield bearing a crescent moon, a grizzly bear, and a bald eagle, with a ring of 24 stars above indicating Missouri was the 24th state admitted to the Union. Gateway Arch National Park in St. Louis draws visitors from across the region and its parking areas are a reliable source. If you're on I-44 heading toward Branson or the Ozarks, you'll see Missouri plates clustering even more densely as you approach the tourist corridor in the southwest part of the state. On the Kansas side of Kansas City, watch for Missouri plates mixing freely with Kansas plates — the state line runs right through the metro area and cross-border commuting is constant.

Missouri's "Show-Me State" motto on the plate is one of the most recognized state slogans in the country, but its exact origin is disputed. The phrase is commonly attributed to a congressman named Willard Vandiver, who reportedly said in an 1899 speech that "frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me — I'm from Missouri, and you've got to show me." Whether or not that speech is the true source, the motto stuck — and Missouri drivers have been displaying it on their plates for decades, making it one of the few state slogans that doubles as a genuine piece of cultural identity rather than just tourism marketing.
