Pure Michigan (Standard)

Michigan's flagship current plate is built around the state's long-running "Pure Michigan" tourism brand. The plate has a striking navy blue header that fills the top third, decorated with a subtle layered wave pattern that evokes the Great Lakes. The center field is clean white, dominated by the plate characters in large, bold navy blue letters. "PURE Michigan" sits at the top in white serif caps with a distinctive flowing blue cursive "M" worked into the word — the same mark used in all Pure Michigan advertising. At the bottom, "michigan.org" appears in blue, making this one of the few plates in the country that uses a web address as the primary tagline. Mackinac Bridge

This specialty plate is a showstopper. The plate characters run very large and bold in bright white, filling most of the usable field. It is the simplest of Michigan's current plate family — no wave graphics, no scenery, no specialty branding — just the state name, the number, and the region's defining geographic feature. How Rare Is It on the Road Trip Game?

Common. Michigan has roughly 10 million residents, making it the tenth most populous state in the country. The state's drivers spill out onto I-75, I-94, I-96, and I-69 in large numbers, and Michigan plates are a fixture at rest stops throughout Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Summer travel to the Great Lakes and Upper Peninsula pushes them even further afield.

The I-75 corridor from Detroit north through Flint and Saginaw toward the Mackinac Bridge is pure Michigan plate territory in summer. Rest stops on the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/I-90) near Toledo are productive year-round, since that stretch is the main funnel for Michigan drivers heading south and east. Fun Fact

Michigan is the only state in the contiguous United States made up of two separate land peninsulas — the Lower Peninsula (shaped like a mitten, which Michiganders famously use as a hand map) and the Upper Peninsula — joined across the Straits of Mackinac by the five-mile Mackinac Bridge, which opened in 1957. The bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its completion and remains one of the longest in the Western Hemisphere.
